Add Cuttyhunk Island to your list of summer destinations; it's easy to explore this small maritime village either on a guided walk with experienced OceanQuest naturalists or on your own. Commentary focuses on various landmarks, lighthouse, geology and wildlife. Don't like nature walks? There's the Cuttyhunk Historical Museum, the Gosnold Monument, and the Cuttyhunk Historical Society with exhibits chronicling the island's history.

You will have a four-hour stay on Cuttyhunk to explore its quaint village and harbor; guided walks. Bring a picnic lunch or buy lunch from the island's general store or food cart. This is a real chance to see a forgotten part of the Cape and learn the natural and political history of all the Elizabeth Islands.

Join us for a day-long excursion to Cuttyhunk Island, off the southern coast of Massachusetts. The cruise will depart from Woods Hole and will take us through Vineyard Sound and along the Elizabeth Islands. Experienced Mass Audubon naturalists will provide commentary focusing on landmarks, geology, wildlife, and the history of the quiet, protected islands. Along the way, we'll look for endangered Roseate Terns and other species of seabirds and waterfowl.

We'll spend four hours on Cuttyhunk enjoying the quaint village, harbor, and scenic views from the top of Lookout Hill, 150 feet above sea level. We will spend time exploring the islands habitats for migratory songbirds and watching from Lookout Hill for passing raptors, on their journey southward for the winter. Participants will have a choice of a short, medium or long guided walk. The long hike has more of a focus on birds and natural history while the shorter hikes focus on island history and landmarks. During the long hike, we will pass by land owned by Mass Audubon. All hikes go to Lookout Hill. Afterwards, you will have time to visit a gift shop, take a swim, or explore the beaches.

Leaders: Ian Ives Sanctuary Director, Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, John Galluzzo, Historian/Naturalist, South Shore Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Robert Buchsbaum, Mass Audubon Scientist and marine specialist.
